At the core of my booklet, A Short Guide to Lighting a Candle are Six Steps to Lighting (and Extinguishing) a Candle.
From the beginning, I somehow knew there would be at least six. If you have ever looked intently inside a beehive, you will know there are hundreds of six-sided cells in each frame. Beehives are pervaded by them. So I was pretty sure there would be at least six steps to lighting a candle. Just sayin’
What I didn’t count on though was that when I was done describing and refining the Six Steps, that in fact, a Seventh appeared.
Here I was creating this six step process. And while that IS great in itself, I realized there was something missing. These steps are unique, creative, hopeful, helpful….but something was not connecting.
Bear with me here.
The hexagonal cells in the beehive contain honey and bee eggs. Probably the most treasured things for bees.
What does lighting a beeswax candle hold? What would honey and bee eggs be in human terms?
I think a lit beeswax candle holds the promise and challenge of our human journeying. A substance and place where we can reflect, connect, express, cry, rejoice, collect ourselves, know our heart’s longings and disappointments. Human extremes and everything in between. We speak and listen inwardly with the Divine, express deep thanks to Earth for everything she holds and is for us all. The flame holds our highest intentions including our grieving, mourning and remembering.
All of life, in essence. Plus enabling potential for whatever we need to restore balance, connection, peace within ourselves and others. All within love in our heart.
Our intentions, our striving, and the journey that develops. Micro and macro understandings, together in our hearts. Asking our deepest questions and listening. Even if wordless.
The surprise of the Seventh
For me personally, this Seventh Step, has come alive as this Short Guide to Lighting a Candle got closer and closer to being released into the world. I truly never imagined I would need to deal with the dearth of questions and ‘what ifs’ that have arisen. My own doing, of course. And more importantly, my learning how to navigate such. A real happening.
In the midst of it all, I was thankful again and again, that there is something tangible in our world that invites us to draw close to our even most intimate personal journeys in life. A lit beeswax candle glows and glows in our hearts for ages after the flame has gone out long ago.
It’s not only the bees
Of course, it is what we bring to candles that really makes the difference. An open heart, a readiness to be within Silence, around and within us. The same Silence that holds all of Nature too. Learning a practice of listening in the heart. The “promise and challenge of our human journeying.”
This is what bees gift us in these modern times! A ‘potencia’ in our heart so we can listen and have courage to be the interweaving of love and wisdom together in our world.. How we can be connected in our heart when we are ‘doing’ our life. Being in our doing. Or as I like to put it: ‘bee-ing in our doing’!

Cues from the bees
I am taking my cues here from what bees do when they discover a new source of Nectar when they are out foraging. They come right back to the hive and let the other foragers know where this great source is. This is the bees intricate ‘waggle dance’ now famous through a Nobel Prize. Then those bees all go off with the ‘waggle dance’ directions. Benefitting the whole beehive community in doing so.
If the booklet moves you, I would really love if you let others know why and then where they too can get a copy, share my website link and encourage them to join my website list. www.candlesconnectinghearts.com
I am very excited about launching this booklet finally! It feels very organic, connecting to so many elements in my life’s journeying. I can hardly wait to see how this small ‘seed’ will grow!
Thank you for being who you are and what you do in the world!
